Guimaro Camino Real

Located in Sober, Amandi, Adegas Guimaro makes terroir-focussed wines in Ribeira Sacra. Founded in 1991, the bodega is headed by Pedro Manuel Rodriguez. Guimaro adopted Pedro’s grandfathers nickname, that roughly translates to ‘rebel’ in Galician.

Pedro is an organic maker and farmer, producing Mencia fruit from his old vines situated upon the steep slopes of Ribeira Sacra.

After taking over the Guímaro business in 2006, the focus continued to be upon producing young wines.

A chance meeting with legendary producer, Raúl Pérez, brought a shift towards natural yeasts, whole-bunch ferments and the use of foudres.

The ‘Camino Real’ is sourced from a small (6ha) plot from vines over 50 years old, making for incredibly concentrated and juicy fruit.

If you’re unfamiliar with Mencia, this is as good as it gets, think between Pinot Noir and Syrah.

A must try!
